about

Intricate harmonies and strong songs make up the next chapter in the Chris Richards saga. Some post Hippodrome demos made the rounds in the pop world and ended up in the hands of self pronounced Hippodrome superfan Jerker Emanuelson, who flipped over the demos and asked the Chris Richards and Keith Klingensmith to record one track each for the first release on his newly formed label, the pop compilation "Hit The Hay Vol 1" (Sound Asleep Records, 1994). The cut Chris chose to record was the rockin' "You Wear It Well" and Keith's tune was a great little pop ditty called "Ann Marie." The raves rolled in for Chris and Keith's tracks, and a joint project seemed in demand. Enter The Phenomenal Cats. The countless demos already recorded by these two unquestionable geniuses made this all the easier. In 1996 the (soon to be pop classic) "Seagirl and 5 Other Dogs" (Sound Asleep Records) was released. The national press they received for this record was just incredible, including raves in Audities, Yellow Pills, and a spot on Goldmine's "Best of '96" year end list. The Cats were on top of their own little pop world. Due to time restraints and Keith's displeasure of playing live, Chris "Just Let Me On Stage" Richards felt the tug of performing live once again. The Pantookas were formed just before the release of "Seagirl and 5 Other Dogs" as an outlet for Chris's ever expanding catalog of songs and to scratch that performance itch. But they have become so much more than that! With the lineup of Chris (guitar, vocals), Ken Quick (bass) and Larry Grodsky (drums), The Pantookas went in the studio to record their first record "Salad" (Dogbunny Records, 1997). A little more rockin' than the P Cats, "Salad" unintentionally created some confusion for fans of the P Cats record. But for every soul thrown by "Salad", a new fan was created. The press continued to roll in, more of which came from the local level, one area the The P Cats didn't break. The Pantookas disbanded in 1999 due to multiple wife swapping/key party mishaps.
